Setting the Goal-Post for Theme Music.

Anyone over the age of forty is likely familiar with the music of Mike Post. While perhaps not a household name, his music has been part of our lives. Many do not even realize that some of the most recognizable songs of our lives were produced by the same man.

Post has had such a remarkable presentation because he has, in addition to producing landmark albums, scored many legendary television themes. His first major milestone was wining a Grammy at the tender age of twenty three for Best Instrumental Arrangement on Mason Williams’ Classical Gas.

As he dove into writing for television, his first major hit came in 1974 with his theme for The Rockford Files, one of my personal favorites.

Other notable small screen themes he wrote include Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue, The A-Team, CHiPs, Quantum Leap, and many others. For my money his most iconic theme will of course always be Magnum P.I.

A remarkable feat of these theme songs is that several of them became radio singles that charted high on the Billboard Charts. The Greatest American Hero, which he co-wrote went all the way to #2.

In another notable production role, Mike Post manned the helm for the oft-maligned Van Halen III. Post even plays the piano accompanying Eddie Van Halen’s acoustic guitar on the track Neworld. So Post, it can be argued, is one of the best known “unknown” figures of pop culture. This is the man after all, who came up with the iconic “Dun-Dun” sound for Law and Order.
